Change your Reaction, for a better Action

I recently read this article and having my own reaction I thought I would share a perspective.

How to Permanently Change Your Attitude About Work

Here are some of ideas presented…

(Note I have replaced some words with “…” for brevity, hopefully I have not changed the intended meaning)

We want to know ten things we can do to feel better about work. We want those quick bulleted answers to the everyday drudge that many of us feel.

The only way to change your landscape is to change yourself … change your level of resiliency. Adjusting the way that we handle things that … impact the quality of your life. How often have you felt frustrated at the end of a day because your checklist wasn’t checked? How angry did you become when a project or plan was derailed? This aggravation eats up energy and consumes thoughts.

It may not seem like you don’t have any control over your day when things get in the way of your plans.

One of the biggest gifts … is the power to choose how you react. … most of us react with some level of anger or frustration when things don’t go our way. But allowing yourself to not react or become a patient observer is an ideal way to spend your day.

For me if I am feeling frustrated as outcome from a work activity then this is my reaction to not being able to contribute, to add value, which hopefully leads to fulfilling a purpose.

Perhaps it is not about not reacting, however to react by contributing to what you can control. A good way to contribute is to Listen, Observe and the Act.

I leave you with this.

Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

Another useful perspective I came across while reading a Goodreads review of ‘Aristotle’s Way’.

Ryan Boissonneault

“ Stoicism recommends the acceptance of what one cannot control, not the resignation from the business of everyday living and problem-solving. If this were true, Marcus Aurelius would not have been the emperor of Rome! “
